A tourist hotel in the Tunisian town of Sousse has been attacked, Reuters reports citing security sources. An exchange of fire has been heard at the scene. The dead included foreign tourists.

Ongoing exchanges of gunfire were being reported between the attackers and security forces, sources told Al Jazeera.

There were no other details immediately available.

Tunisia has been on high alert since March when gunmen attacked the Bardo museum in Tunis, killing a group of foreign tourists in one of the worst attacks in a decade in the North African country.

The spokesman added that the ministry believed the number of casualties and injured could rise.

The attack comes after 21 foreign tourists were killed in a museum on March 18, 2015, at the hands of two armed militants in an operation ISIL later claimed responsibility for.
