Three gunmen were killed early Saturday in clashes with security forces in the North Sinai city of Sheikh Zuweid.
Gunmen attacked a security checkpoint in the Abu Taweila area in the eastern part of the city before army and police forces besieged the area, eyewitnesses told Anadolu Agency.
Another gunman was reportedly injured in the clashes.
It remains unclear whether security forces suffered any casualties.
There was no comment from Egyptian authorities on the incident.
On Friday, army spokesman Ahmed Ali said that 203 "terrorist elements" suspected of attacking vital installations and security personnel in Sinai had been arrested, while 78 others had been killed.
Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, which shares borders with both Israel and the Palestinian Gaza Strip, has seen almost daily attacks by unknown assailants since the July 3 ouster of President Mohamed Morsi by the powerful military.
The Egyptian military has responded by launching a wide-scale operation against what it says are Sinai-based militant groups.Güncelleme Tarihi: 24 Ağustos 2013, 10:38
