Some 65 senior figures of the Muslim Brotherhood and Gamaa Islamiya were put on military trial Monday in the canal city of Suez on alleged charges of attacking churches and army troops.

The trial took place inside the military zone on Suez-Cairo road.

The military prosecution accuses the defendants of inciting, assisting and complicity in the killing of citizens, burning of three churches and the torching of five army armored vehicles.

Suez, like many provinces across Egypt, were gripped by violence after security forces violently dispersed two major anti-coup protest camps.

The bloody dispersal left several hundred people dead and many others injured.

It triggered mass demonstrations countrywide.

Gamaa Islamiya is considered a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.
