An Algerian soldier was killed early Saturday during clashes with an armed gang near Algeria's joint border with neighboring Morocco, a security source has said.
"Algerian army troops engaged in a shootout with an armed gang in the early hours of Saturday in the country's northwestern town of Beni Boussaid near the Moroccan border," the source told The Anadolu Agency on condition of anonymity.
"An Algerian soldier was killed during the shootout," the source said, adding that the soldier's body was transferred to a morgue in Maghnia, a town 600km west of capital Algiers.
He noted that investigations were underway to identify the members of the gang.
Officially sealed since 1994, the Algerian-Moroccan border is frequently infiltrated by drug traffickers who smuggle contraband from Morocco into Algeria.
