Egypt's state security prosecution had accused senior Muslim Brotherhood figure Mohamed Ali Beshr of spying for the United States and Norway, a Brotherhood lawyer said Saturday.
Beshr was interrogated for an hour on Saturday, Abdel-Moneim Abdel-Maqsoud said, noting that the senior Brotherhood leader refused to answer questions asked him after he was accused of espionage.
"The accusations are baseless," Abdel-Maqsoud said, adding that Beshr would be interrogated yet against on Monday.
The state security prosecution is yet to comment on the its interrogation of the Brotherhood figure.
An administrative development minister under ousted president Mohamed Morsi, Beshr was on Thursday ordered jailed for 15 days pending investigations into the charges leveled against him.
He was arrested on Thursday upon an arrest warrant issued him by the prosecution.
On Saturday, his family called on "concerned agencies" to intervene to prevent any deterioration in his health condition during his temporary detention, describing the charges brought up against him as "fabricated."
The family added in a statement that Beshr was placed in a southern Cairo jail cell full of insects.
"Attempts by the family to deliver covers, clothes and food to him had failed," Beshr's family said in the statement.
Anadolu Agency could not immediately obtain comments from the authorities on Beshr's family's claims.
Morsi was ousted by the military in July of last year following massive opposition protests against his rule.
Since Morsi's overthrow, Egyptian authorities have maintained a harsh crackdown on his supporters, putting hundreds in jail.
Late last December, Egyptian authorities branded the Muslim Brotherhood, the group from which Morsi hails, a "terrorist" group.
The pro-Morsi National Alliance for the Defense of Legitimacy termed Beshr's arrest as part of a "fierce campaign against its components."
"Beshr's detention is undoubtedly a new loss to the Egyptian political scene," the bloc said in a Facebook statement following the man's arrest.
