Central African Republic ex-president Michel Djotodia's foreign minister has announced that he is on his way to Benin, where it is believed he will remain in self-exile.

Djotodia, CAR's first Muslim president since the country gained indepedence from France, stepped down on Friday after violence between Muslim seleka rebels and anti-balaka Christian militias resulted in the death of hundreds of citizens.

He came to power in March 2013 when seleka rebels ousted the then president, but was forced to step down after France sent troops to support African missions in the country to quell the violence. However, France has been accused of being biased towards Christian anti-balaka militias against the Muslim population.
