At least 16 people were killed Wednesday in two suicide bomb attacks in northeast Nigeria, police and aid workers said.

The bombers -- suspected Boko Haram militants -- targeted a housing estate in Damaturu, the capital of Yobe state, at around 6.10 a.m. local time (0510GMT). Local media reported one of the bombers targeted a mosque.

Yobe police spokesman Toyin Gbadegesin said their explosives were detonated simultaneously, killing around a dozen people. Another attacker threw an explosive device at people gathered on the outskirts of the city.

The head of the State Emergency Management Agency Musa Jidawa said: “16 dead bodies have been evacuated from the scene." He said 10 people had been injured.

Boko Haram has recently stepped up bomb attacks in Nigeria's volatile northeast.
