A police officer was killed and another was wounded in the early hours of Monday in an attack against a police vehicle in the Upper Egyptian province of Minya.

The vehicle was ambushed along the agricultural road in Mallawi town where it came under a hail of bullets, a security source told the Anadolu Agency.

Security forces are currently combing the nearby areas in pursuit of the attackers, added the source.

Egypt has been in the throes of political violence since the powerful army ousted elected President Mohamed Morsi in a military coup on July 3 following mass protests against his regime.

Since then, hundreds of anti-coup demonstrators have been killed and thousands injured countrywide by security forces.

Scores of police and army personnel have also been targeted in attacks on security installations and checkpoints.
