Egyptian authorities announced the arrest of Muslim Brotherhood's supreme leader Mohamed Badie in the early hours of Tuesday.
Badie was detained inside a flat in the vicinity of the Rabaa al-Adawiya area, a high-level Interior Ministry official told Anadolu Agency.
The Muslim Brotherhood leader is facing alleged charges of incitement to murder and violence.
Rabaa al-Adawiya area was the site of a major six-week-old sit-in by supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsi.
The sit-in was violently dispersed by security forces last week, leaving hundreds of protesters killed and thousands wounded.
