France's parliament approved a motion to extend the country’s military presence in the Central African Republic on Tuesday.

There were 428 in favor and 14 against during the vote at the General Assembly. Opposition parties also supported the motion.

France sent a force of 1,600 troops to CAR in December and earlier this month deployed 400 more troops to bolster its presence.

Ahead of the vote, Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said the military intervention has had positive results and supported extending the military mission in CAR.

Since December 2012, violence and instability have forced close to a million people to flee within CAR and to neigbouring Cameroon, Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Congo.
