Jews in S.Africa retreat threat to harass Goldstone over Gaza report

Richard Goldstone, who chaired a United Nations report detailing Israel's war crimes in Gaza offensive will go to his grandson's bar mitzvah after Jewish groups in South Africa retreated a threat to halt him from the event.

Israel killed nearly 1500 Palestinians in Gaza offensive and destroyed homes, hospitals, schools, mosques in the besieged land.

Some Jews called Goldstone, himself a Jew, a "traitor" over Gaza war crimes report.

Some Jewish groups were angered by the former South African constitutional court judge's report on the 2008-2009 military assault in Gaza, in which he accused both Israel and the Palestinians of war crimes.

The report was concluded in September and submitted to the United Nations Security Council.

Goldstone initially said he would not attend his grandson's right of passage on Saturday if the event was to be marred by protests.

But Wendy Kahn, the national director of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies, said an agreement had been reached and that protests were called off after Goldstone agreed to meet local organisations.

Israeli forces deliberately attacked civilians, failed to take precautions to minimize loss of civilian life and cited strong evidence Israeli forces committed "grave breaches" of the Geneva Convention, the 575-page report noted.

The firing of white phosphorous shells and the use of high explosive artillery shells were listed as "violations of humanitarian law."

Israel rejected a cooperation with the Goldstone team or had not allowed it onto its territory.
