Jonathan wins Nigerian ruling party nomination

Nigeria's ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) declared President Goodluck Jonathan the winner of its presidential primaries on Friday.

But Jonathan's win interrupts an agreement in the PDP that power should rotate between the mostly Muslim north and largely Christian south every two terms.

"I declare Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to be the winner of this presidential primary," chief returning officer Tunde Adeniran told a party convention in the capital Abuja, shortly after the final votes were counted.

The ruling Peoples Democratic Party has won every presidential vote since Nigeria returned to civilian rule in 1999.
