At least 450 internally displaced victims of Boko Haram insurgency died at refugee camps in Nigeria's troubled northeast Borno state in 2015, a local health official said Tuesday.
Cases of malaria, diarrhea, pneumonia and measles were some of the ailments causing deaths among the refugees, Borno Health Commissioner Dr. Haruna Mshelia.
Mshelia added that 98 children died of severe malnutrition out of the 54,000 children taking refuge at the refugee camps.
"All children under five years at IDP [Internally Displaced People] camps now undergo screening every two to three months for evidence of malnutrition," he added, saying the measure was to prevent more children from dying.
About two million people have been displaced by the six year Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast region, according to a report by the local national emergency agency said.
