Nigeria confirms resignation of ruling party leader

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan confirmed on Thursday the resignation of his ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) party chairman Bamanga Tukur.

Jonathan made the announcement during a meeting of the PDP's National Executive Committee (NEC) in Abuja, Nigeria's political capital.

At least four top PDP functionaries told Anadolu Agency earlier today that Tukur had resigned his post.

Tukur's exit became a fate accompli in the past days as many members of the party's National Working Committee accused him of running a one-man show and backed calls by the party's powerful governors that Tukur should go.

The septuagenarian worsened his situation early this week boasting that only the party's National Convention - at which he was elected - can remove him.
