The Nigerian Defense Ministry said the country would start to withdraw its troops from Mali.

Spokesman of Defense Ministry Chris Olukolade said Nigeria would pull 700 of his 1,000 troops from the West African nation.

The African Union had also said earlier this month that Nigeria would withdraw some troops to fight an uprising in its northeast.

Violence linked to an insurgency by Boko Haram, mainly in Nigeria's north, has left some 3,600 people dead since 2009, including killings by the security forces.
