An alliance backing ousted president Mohamed Morsi on Saturday called for staging mass protests during next week's Muslim Eid (feast) holiday.
"We call on youths and students to lead revolutionary activities throughout the Eid, ahead of the August 14 uprising," the National Alliance for the Defense of Legitimacy said in a statement.
Hundreds of Egyptians were killed and thousands injured on August 14 last year when the authorities moved to disperse sit-ins in support of ousted president Mohamed Morsi in the Egyptian capital Cairo and the adjacent Giza province.
The statement of the alliance on Saturday referred to a previous invitation for Morsi's backers to commemorate the victims of the sit-ins' dispersals on August 14, the first anniversary of the event.
Egypt's army ousted Morsi in July last year, opening the door for violence across this country as well as unending protests by the backers of the ousted president.
