Scores dead as passenger plane crashes in Libya

A passenger plane crashed in Libya on Wednesday, killing 105 people, Al Arabiya television said, citing official sources.

A Libyan airport official told Reuters the aircraft was a Libyan-operated Airbus which was flying from South Africa and crashed as it attempted to land at Tripoli airport. The official said he could not immediately confirm the casualty figures.

Libya's Afriqiyah airline said there were 93 passengers and 11 crew on board its aircraft when it had an accident during landing but that it had no information on casualties or survivors.

"Afriqiyah Airways announce that our flight 8U771 had an accident during landing at Tripoli International airport," the airline said on its web site.

"At this moment we have no information concerning possible casualties or survivors. Our information is that there were 93 passengers and 11 crew aboard. The competent authorities are conducting the search and rescue mission," it added.

A South African foreign ministry spokeswoman said the plane had left Johannesburg the previous evening and was registered as missing.

"We know that there's a plane missing and we are continuing to monitor the situation. It left Johannesburg last night. It was en route to Libya. We have no idea what's happened to it," ministry spokeswoman Nomfanelo Kota told Reuters.
