A Spanish diplomat has been stabbed to death by unidentified attackers at his home in Khartoum, a Sudanese police source said Monday.

The 61-year-old official headed the Spanish embassy's visa section and had worked in the country for three years was found dead at his home in Khartoum's upscale Garden City neighborhood by his maid, who reported the death early in the morning, the source said.

Police are currently investigating the crime scene, the source added.

The Spanish embassy in Khartoum has yet to issue a comment.

Sudan's Foreign Ministry has expressed sorrow over the death of a Spanish diplomat.

"Security agencies in Khartoum State have started their investigation to find the criminals as soon as possible," the ministry said in a statement.

"The Sudanese government is strictly committed to the protection of all foreign diplomats," it added.

The ministry did not, however, provide further details about the Spanish diplomat's death, an event it described in its statement as "regrettable."
