Tanzania would host a regional summit next week to discuss how to put an end to a growing political crisis in neighboring Burundi, Foreign Minister Bernard Membe has said.
"The special summit of the East African Community (EAC) would be held on Wednesday in Dar es Salaam," Membe, currently in Burundi for an EAC meeting, told reporters late Wednesday.
The foreign ministers of Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania arrived Wednesday in the Burundian capital upon a request from Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete to meet with leaders of political parties and activists of civil society, a government source told.
Burundi has been rocked by protests since late April, when the ruling National Council for the Defense of Democracy named President Pierre Nkurunziza its candidate for the presidential polls in June.
