A Tunisian court ordered on Tuesday the release of Ridha Grira, who served as the last defense minister under ousted president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, a judicial official said.
Despite his release, Grira was still being investigated in connection with corruption charges, prosecution spokesman Soufiane Sliti told reporters.
Grira had been in prison since September 2011 over corruption charges. He was convicted in February 2013 of abusing his power to illegally facilitate the sale of state lands to Ben Ali’s nephew Karim Ben Ali at a lower price than its real value.
Local civil society and rights groups had been calling for the release of the former minister, who is suffering from cancer, on health grounds.Last Mod: 05 Mart 2014, 09:47
