Yemeni hurt after setting himself alight

A young Yemeni was badly injured on Wednesday after he set himself alight in the main square of the southern town of Sheikh Othman, residents and an official said.

Acquaintances said 25-year-old Fouad Sultan was unable to support his family on his taxi earnings, but it was not immediately clear whether his suicide attempt was a bid to emulate a similar act in Tunisia which triggered an uprising.

Across the Arab world, instances of public self-immolation have been numerous in recent weeks, since the death of a Tunisian vegetable seller led to the overthrow of the president.

As in much of the region, Yemenis complain of mounting poverty among a growing young population and frustration with a lack of political influence.

Yemen, the poorest Arab country, faces inflation hovering at around 12 percent and unemployment at 35 percent. More than 40 percent of the 23 million Yemenis live on less than $2 a day, making hunger a commonplace reality for many.
