Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People Chairman Mustafa Abdülcemil Qırımoğlu, commonly known as Mustafa Cemiloğlu in Turkey, gathered with Turkish community leaders in New York last week.

Amidst applause, the Crimean Tatars' world leader took the stage for his speech at a meeting of the American Association of Crimean Turks in Brooklyn, New York. Cemiloğlu informed the participants about developments in Crimea.

“We have started the real struggle now. The standard of living of the Crimean Turks is very low compared to that of other nations. Unemployment and homelessness are big issues. We have many problems in securing our legal and political rights,” he said.

Also a deputy in the Ukrainian parliament, Cemiloğlu said the parliament passed legislation to allow for a reinstatement of the rights of individuals who have been exiled on account of their racial background. “But the former president vetoed it. Now we continue our endeavors to get the law passed.”

Qırımoğlu began his North American visit in Ottawa and Toronto upon an invitation by the Canadian parliament.

Cemiloğlu is the political leader of the Crimean Tatars and has been chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People since the 1990s.
