First US man sentenced after drone arrest

US citizen Rodney Brossart has become the first man in American history to be sentenced after an arrest which was made possible by the use of drone technology.

Brossart was arrested in 2011 after being involved in a 16-hour armed stand-off with a SWAT team in the state of North Dakota.

A drone which was requested from the local Department of Homeland Security's Customs and Border Patrol then located Brossart, giving police a heads up on the right opportunity to raid his property.

Despite pleas from his lawyer Bruce Quick on the grounds that the police did not have the judicial approval to use a predator drone in the raid, in 2012 the court ruled that the use of the drone had nothing to do with the charges put against him. This decision was again upheld by a jury on Tuesday.

It was also revealed on Tuesday that the Customs and Border Patrol had lent out its drone 700 times to various agencies between 2010 and 2012.

While some welcome the use of drones to provide extra security, many have objected to their use, fearing that they represent a further step towards forming a police state or may fall into the hands of terrorists.
