At least seven died and 64 others were injured when two buildings in East Harlem, New York, collapsed after a suspected gas explosion on Wednesday.
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, who described Wednesday’s blast as ‘’a tragedy of the worst kind,’’ said preliminary reports indicate the warning of a gas leak came just 15 minutes before the explosion, which occurred at around 9:30 a.m.
Gas supplier firm Consolidated Edison said it received a notice call at around 9:13 a.m. about a gas leak. Two crews were dispatched at around 9:15 a.m. but arrived after the explosion occurred, officials said.
"The explosion occurred before that team could arrive," De Blasio said. "This is a tragedy of the worst kind, because there was no indication in time to save people."Last Mod: 13 Mart 2014, 16:38
