US sanctions bank, TV in Israel-besieged Gaza

The U.S. Treasury said on Thursday it imposed sanctions against two firms in Gaza that has been already under Israeli siege for years.

Gaza is still considered under Israeli occupation as Israel controls air, sea and land access to the Strip.

It said the sanctions were imposed against Islamic National Bank, opened by Hamas in April 2009.

Hamas says it will fight until Israel ends decades of occupation and will not accept an Israel state on its own territories.

Hamas defends itself, saying "armed resistance is an international legal right against an occupation".

The Treasury said the sanctions prohibit Americans from transactions with the designated entities and seek to freeze any assets they may have under U.S. jurisdiction.

Hamas won a parliamentary election in January 2006, ending a near-monopoly on power by the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) and its dominant faction, Fatah.

Israel, which wants to crush any Palestinian liberation movement, responded to Hamas's win in the elections with sanctions, and almost completely blockaded the impoverished coastal strip after Hamas seized power in 2007, although a ‘lighter’ siege had already existed before.
