US says not to join UN Cyprus meeting in Geneva

The U.S. Department of State said on Wednesday that the United States would not participate in the trilateral Cyprus meeting to take place in Geneva, Switzerland.

Philip Crowley, the U.S. assistant secretary of state, released a statement and said United Nations (UN) Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was expected to meet President Dervis Eroglu of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias in Geneva on January 26.

"The United States is not a participant in the ongoing Cypriot-led negotiations and is not participating in the Geneva meeting," Crowley said.

Crowley also said the United States strongly supported the negotiations under the auspices of the United Nations Secretary-General's Good Offices Mission under Alexander Downer to reach a settlement reunifying the island as a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation.
