The administration of President Barack Obama in the United States has briefed the US Senate that they were suspending aid to Egypt until a "review" is underway, American CNN television claimed today.
CNN points out if US had decided to halt aid to Egypt calling the situation a military coup, Washington couldn't restart aid until a democratically elected government takes charge. Instead, "Obama administration has taken temporary steps that ultimately allows it to move forward on either scenario: pressing ahead with the aid or cutting it off."
According to report a spokesman for Senator Patrick Leahy, David Carle, confirmed his office has been told the aid has been halted. Leahy is chairman of the Appropriations State and Foreign Operations Subcommittee.
White House spokesman Josh Earnest said yesterday they wanted a prompt return to a democratically elected, civilian government in Egypt and they might also use their influence at the IMF and tourism industry in addition to aid.
.Before CNN's report on suspending aid to Egypt another American news outlet, AP reported, instead of permanently cutting off the aid, "the administration appears to be opting for a more piecemeal approach, cutting off the delivery of four F-16 fighter jets and canceling joint U.S-Egyptian military exercises planned for next month. The administration is also considering suspending about $250 million in annual U.S. economic aid for Egypt, officials said."Güncelleme Tarihi: 20 Ağustos 2013, 11:06
