Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe reiterated Monday he intends to stay in office after a major election defeat and said he would reshuffle his cabinet.
"It was a severe result. We accept the people's judgement seriously and sincerely," Abe told a news conference a day after his party lost a majority in one house of parliament.
"However, it is my responsibility to continue with my mission in building a new nation and pushing for reform," the conservative leader said.
Abe said he would reshuffle his cabinet, which has been plagued by scandals.
"I have the responsibility in appointing cabinet members and the voters have called for a reshuffle of the cabinet," he said.
