Aceh will campaign on tsunami early warning systems

The Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD)province of Indonesia and the Aceh-Nias Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency (BRR) have launched a campaign on the use oftsunami early warning systems, mindful of the tsunami disaster that happened on Dec. 26, 2004.

The Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD)province of Indonesia and the Aceh-Nias Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency (BRR) have launched a campaign on the use oftsunami early warning systems, mindful of the tsunami disaster that happened on Dec. 26, 2004.

"The campaign will last three months and consist of road shows in tsunami-prone areas in a bid to make the people more aware of the tsunami threat," Twk Mirza Keumala, an Aceh-Nias BRR spokesman, was quoted by national Antara News Agency as saying on Monday.

The campaign was kicked off at the BRR's media center with the pushing of buttons to set off sirens by the province's Vice Governor Muhammad Nazar.

The siren buttons were installed in two vans aimed to publicize the tsunami early warning system especially to the people in coastal areas.

Mirza said the campaign was the result of cooperation among the NAD-Nias BRR, Indonesian Red-Cross, the Study Center and Disaster Mitigation of Syiah Kuala University, the Indonesian Disaster Handling Community and GTZ Germany.

In addition, Alvin Hidayat, organizing committee chairman of the tsunami early warning system campaign, said that at the first step, the campaign is expected to reach some 1,000 families in five areas in Aceh Besar district.

It was reported that more than 200,000 people were killed and went missing in the Dec. 26, 2004 tsunami calamity, over 100,000 buildings including houses were destroyed and 800 kilometers of coastal areas in the most-western province were damaged.

According to the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) recently, Indonesia has installed 90 tsunami early warning systems in a number of regions in 2007.
