Former Finnish president Martti Ahtisaari, a member of The Elders, said that Serbia can not join the EU without recognizing Kosovo, according to Pristina media reports.
"States that had conflicts in the Balkans will not be able to join the European Union without normalizing their relations. In this case, Serbia cannot join the EU without recognizing Kosovo," Sophia Echo quoted Ahtisaari as saying.
Report of Ahtisaari, the former United Nations special envoy for Kosovo, was the immediate prelude to Kosovo's February 2008 unilateral declaration of independence from Serbia.
States that do not recognise Kosovo should be held responsible for impeding the progress of European Union enlargement, Ahtisaari said in Brussels.
Ahtisaari said that he regretted that the EU was divided on Kosovo recognition.
In an interview with German daily Die Presse, Ahtisaari said that the EU should not accept Serbia's accession unless Belgrade recognised Kosovo.
Kosovo's Albanian majority backed by the Western countries declared independence in 2008 nine years after Serbia moved ethnic cleansing in a 1998-1999 counter-insurgency war. Nato stopped the Serbian forces in a 78-day bombing.
Kosovo is recognized as an independent state by 60 countries from mostly European Union and also Muslim countries around world such as Turkey, Saudi Arabia.

Well Mr. Athisaari, how about we turn it around and say that Kosovo cannot enter EU without recognising Serbia as it's country since this is the truth.
Why does Serbia need to recognise Kosovo? Bad relations between Serbs and Albanians is because of the illegal UDI and this needs to be rectified.
So in your version of democracy the minority should have say in what happens and the majority needs to back off and accept it. 62 countries out of 192 is clearly NOT the majority.
The world has spoken and you need to listen. Your plan never got off the ground which makes you quite irrelevant now.
Just as well you don't have any say so in what happens here.

The truth needs to come out about how the world is wrong about Serbia. I spent many years working in Kosovo and it needs to be returned to Serbia.
Americans who know what really happend in Kosovo do not approve. Most Americans have no idea how we have treated the Serbs, and if they did they would not be happy about it.
