After leaving later Wednesday, Downer said he would speak at a meeting in London of the Atlantic Partnership forum about the importance of supporting the United States in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"I will also use my visit to the United Kingdom to reiterate the value we place on cooperation with the United Kingdom in countering the terrorist threat, domestically and globally," Downer said in a statement.

Downer said he also plans to attend the Feb. 9-11 Munich Security Conference in Germany, where he also will hold talks with U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer.

During a final stop in Turkey, Downer said he would thank officials for their help in organizing annual ceremonies commemorating the World War I Battle of Gallipoli.

Around 10,000 Australian and New Zealand tourists visit the Gallipoli peninsula in northwestern Turkey each year to remember the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps forces who, under British command, fought a bloody nine-month battle against Turkish forces.

Downer is to return to Australia on Feb. 14
