Brutal Attack Shows Traces of TIT

A possible connection between Alparslan Aslan, who realized the attack against the State Council, and the Turkish Revenge Brigade (TIT) is being investigated. The Istanbul Police report the suspect also took part in the recent attack against Cumhuriyet newspaper. Important information is surfacing about the criminal connections of Lawyer Alparslan Aslan, who opened fire on five members of the State Council 2nd Chamber, killing member Mustafa Yucel Ozbilgin.

The police are focusing on Aslan's connection with the organization Turkish Revenge Brigade (TIT), involved in the assassination of former Chairman of Human Rights Associations (IHD) Akin Birdal. It has also been revealed that the suspect actually took part in the third bomb attack against Cumhuriyet newspaper. Two people reportedly connected with Aslan's State Council attack were taken into custody yesterday.

Ismail S. and Mehmet A., taken in for questioning at the Counter-Terrorism Department, both have a previous criminal record for assault with a deadly weapon. Operations continue in order to arrest the four people involved in the attack against Cumhuriyet whose identities have been determined. The information that Aslan joined both events in person was discovered as a result of analysis of the suspect's mobile phone at police headquarters.

Moreover, the image seen in the newspaper's security camera footage and Aslan's image match. Exams of Aslan's mobile phone traffic show that two of the three people taken into custody in Ankara are quite likely the people who accompanied him in the bomb attacks against Cumhuriyet.

Security forces carrying out the Istanbul branch of the investigation cite the profiles of Alparslan Aslan and his friends as: "they grew up in nationalist and conservative families, but are not devoted to religious matters. They consider alcohol and relationship with women differently from other radical groups. They are against the European Union. They operate in 10-15 person parties."

In addition, Alparslan Aslan is reported to have told acquaintances a short time ago that "big events will occur in Turkey in a few days." The latest mention of 'TIT' organization was during the violent Newroz clashes. The name of the organization, also associated with murders in the 1980s, was nearly forgotten until the assassination of IHD (Human Rights Association) President Akin Birdal.

Erdogan: 'Do not Make Politics over Bloody Events'

While Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan could not join the funeral at the State Council due to his program in Antalya, he assessed the discussions from there. "The best answer to this unfortunate attack is to favor our Republican values over political parties; to protect our unity and cooperation. No one should expect to take advantage by making politics over these values. No one should make politics over bloody events". Highlighting secularism as one of the guarantees of social peace, the prime minister underlined that they were determined to protect the Republic, which depends on democracy, secularism and rule of law and he added, "We may face conspiracies to test our determination".

Prime Minister Erdogan opened yesterday the Falez raised crossroad built by the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality. Erdogan touched upon the attack against the State Council in his speech at the ceremony, and said nobody should attempt to gain political benefit from bloody events. Erdogan said they will make Turkey a safer place for democracy, secularism and law. The Prime Minister petitioned to "overcome difficulties together" and said: "We may confront events that test our determination in protecting our republican values. There are people who try to do such things. The worst of them are the treacherous people aiming to build psychological barriers among us. Such bloody hands attempted to do such a thing yesterday. We all were shaken by the murder of an important member of the State Council. These days should be times to come together. The only answer we should give to the people on the other side of conflict is to work harder to produce more freedom and prosperity."
