A Turkish Airlines plane en route to Cairo from Istanbul made emergency landing at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport on Wednesday after an engine problem.

The Airbus A320 took off at 11:00 a.m. local time from Ataturk Airport but one of the aircraft's cowlings, the metal covering of the engine, dropped immediately after the take-off, officials said.

Pilot requested emergency landing permission from the airport tower and landed at the airport safely at noon.

Passengers were taken to terminal building and the aircraft was pulled to hangar, officials said.
