The Supreme Court of Canada closed the door on foreign tobacco companies' efforts to be excluded from British Columbia's suit to recover billions of dollars in costs for treating smoking diseases.

The Supreme Court of Canada closed the door on Thursday onforeign tobacco companies' efforts to be excluded from British Columbia's suit to recover billionsof dollars in costs for treating smoking diseases.

The high court refused to hear an appeal by eight foreign companies, severalof them holding companies, of a British Columbian court decision that they canbe held liable even if they did not directly sell tobacco products in theprovince.

The foreign companies involved are BAT Industries Plc and its subsidiaryBritish American Tobacco (Investments) Ltd.; Reynolds American Inc.'s R.J.Reynolds Tobacco Co., as well as R.J. Reynolds Tobacco International, Inc.;Altria Group Inc.'s Philip Morris International Inc. and Philip Morris Inc.;Carreras Rothmans Ltd.; and Ryesekks Plc.
