A new poll showed that Canadian Muslims are the most content in the Western world.

Canadian Muslims 'most satisfied' in Western world

Eighty-one percent of Muslims are satisfied living in Canada, the highest score in any Western state, according to the survey by the Environics Research, for public broadcaster CBC.

Muslim in Britain, France, Germany and Spain were polled by the Pew Research Center in early 2005 on similar issues.

Resulted showed that Canadian Muslims are more satisfied living in a Western state than their European counterparts.

"The good news is these numbers do not suggest a minority (in Canada) that is feeling isolated and resentful," Environics vice president Keith Neuman told the CBC.

The survey, which polled 500 Muslim and 2,045 non-Muslim Canadians, found that Canadian Muslims are more educated than the general population, but earn less.

It also showed that Muslim youth feel that discrimination denies them their fair share.

However, only 17% of Canadian Muslims acknowledged feeling hostility from other Canadians, the poll showed. In contrast, 31-51% of European Muslims reported feeling others' anger in the Pew survey.

The survey also found that almost half of the non-Muslim Canadians surveyed said new immigrants should blend in with the rest of the country. About 55% of Muslim Canadians also said that they want to fit in.

However, the two groups are divided about whether Canada should recognize Sharia law to settle family disputes such as divorce and child custody.

An overwhelming majority of non-Muslim Canadians said that Islamic laws shouldn't be recognized in their country, while many Muslims support the endorsement of Shariah law, according to the survey.

The Environics Muslim sample has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points. The larger sample is accurate to within 2.2 percentage points.

It's worth mentioning that a recent international study that measured levels of Islamophobia in 23 Western countries found that Canadians are least likely to have bigoted attitudes towards Muslims.

About 700,000 Muslims live in Canada, less than two percent of the population. Recent estimates suggest that the number of Muslims in Canada is growing rapidly and that Islam is the fastest growing religion in the country.

A survey carried out in May 2003 showed that Islam is the first religion among non-Christian faiths in the Quebec region. It linked the growth in the number of Muslims to the increasing migration wave to Canada from south Asia, North Africa and the Middle East.
