A suicide car bomber detonated his explosives outside a NATO military base at the international airport in the Afghan capital on Tuesday, a police source told Reuters.
Interior Ministry spokesman Zemarai Bashary was quoted as saying that "Two civilians have been martyred, and six civilians have been wounded."
Three American soldiers and a Belgian soldier were also wounded in attack, which happened at the main gate of the international military airport just east of Kabul at 8:30 am (0400 GMT), a military spokesman said.
Huge flames could be seen rising from the site of the blast, the source said. The wail of sirens could be heard several kilometres from the military airport
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the blast.
Military airport has seen a series of Taliban rocket attacks and a suicide strike in the past.
Afghan officials running the civil section of the airport said domestic and foreign flights were not interrupted by the attack, part of the latest spell of rising violence in Afghanistan in recent years.
