Chadian fighters opposed to President Idriss Deby said on Thursday they had launched a fresh offensive in eastern Chad and were engaged in clashes with government forces.
"The forces of the National Alliance totally control the Dar Sila zone and are determined to pursue their offensive against the forces of Deby's decadent rule," a spokesman, Abderaman Koulamallah, said in a statement sent to Reuters.
There was no immediate reaction from the Chadian government or independent confirmation of the advance.
Koulamallah, whose Democratic Union for Change (UDC) group belongs to the insurgent alliance, said the advance had penetrated "deep inside" Chadian territory.
He said forces had shot down a government helicopter after being bombarded by government aircraft.
The fighters have fought a guerrilla war for more than two years to try to overthrow Deby. They denounce him as dictatorial and corrupt.
Units attacked the Chadian capital N'Djamena in early February, besieging Deby in his palace. They later withdrew.
