Colombia, US sign miltary base deal

Colombia and the United States signed a pact on Friday on military bases despite objections from left-leaning South American governments, a U.S. embassy official said.

The agreement has been denounced by neighboring leaders.

Brazil, Bolivia, Ecuador and Venezuela have in the past all expressed their concern.

Under the accord, the US will have access to seven Colombian military bases.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. Chavez says the pact will destabilize the region and could set the stage for a U.S.-led invasion of oil-rich Venezuela, a claim that Bogota and Washington dismiss.

The embassy official, who asked not to be identified, confirmed the agreement was signed on Friday in Bogota.
