The Sri Lankan capital Colombo has been hit by a powerful bomb blast and casualties are feared, police say.

The bomb is reported to have gone off in a residential area of the city.

"We are waiting for details, but we fear there could be casualties," police spokesman Rienzie Perera told the Associated Press.

Eyewitnesses told Reuters they could see plumes of smoke rising above the scene of the blast, but the military said there were no immediate details.

The blast comes as Tamil Tiger rebels fight the military in the north-east of the country over disputed water supplies.
