Congo expels 20,000 Angolans in retaliation
Congo has expelled 20,000 Angolans from its soil in recent days to retaliate against Angola's explusion of Congolese diamond miners, an Angolan official said.
The Democratic Republic of Congo has expelled more than 20,000 Angolans from its territory in recent days to retaliate against Angola's explusion of Congolese diamond miners, an Angolan official said.
Angolan Foreign Ministry spokesman Abreu de Breganha said Angola was sending a high-level government delegation to Kinshasa on Monday to try to put an end to a problem that was straining relations between the once closely allied countries.
"We hope the expulsion of Angolans from the Congo ends soon," said de Breganha, adding that the recent explusions were to retaliate for the regular explusion of thousands of illegal Congolese diamond miners from Angola.
Asked if Angola would retaliate specifically against the wave of expulsions, he replied, "probably not".
The state-owned newspaper Jornal de Angola said most of the Angolans expelled from the DRC were refugees from Angola's 27-year civil war and had been living there legally for decades.
DRC authorities were not immediately available for comment.
