Court indicts ex-Bangladesh PM on extortion

A special court in Bangladesh has indicted former prime minister Sheikha Hasina for allegedly forcing a local businessman to pay her commission to win a government contract during her rule from 1996-2001.

Hasina's younger sister Sheikha Rehana and cousin Sheikh Salim were also formally indicted late Tuesday on charges of extortion, news agency Indo-Asian News Service reported Wednesday.

Hasina and the two others accused were allegedly involved in a case of extortion involving about a quarter of a million dollars, the news agency said.

Hasina has denied any involvement and claimed that the charges were false and leveled against her by her political adversaries.

She was arrested on July 16 under emergency laws introduced by the military-backed caretaker government in Bangladesh.
