Court to start hearing case on headscarf ban next week

Turkey's Constitutional Court will start hearing on June 5th the case filed for annulment of the law that had lifted the ban on headscarf at universities, officials said on Friday.

Turkish lawmakers approved on February 9th constitutional amendments to lift a ban on headscarf in universities. President Abdullah Gul ratified the law on February 22nd. The law amends articles 10 (equality before law) and 42 (right and duty of training and education) of the Constitution.

On February 27th, the opposition Republican People's Party and Democratic Left Party (DSP) referred to the Constitutional Court, asking the judges to either cancel the amendments or consider them nonexistent, and halt the proceedings regarding the mentioned law, until the case was finalized.
