Criminal charges filed against Philippine president

Philippine former Senator Jovito Salonga Wednesday filed three criminal charges against President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo at the Office of the Ombudsman, media reports said on Wednesday.

Criminal charges filed against Philippine president
Salonga accused Arroyo of violating the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act, the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees and the law on plunder, Philippine TV Network GMA News reported.

The former senator based his allegations against the President on her alleged role in the signing of a deal on the implementation of a national telecommunications project, which had been scrapped last October.

Salonga said the cases can later progress when the President's term is over in 2010.
