An elderly woman in Turkish city of Eskisehir was allegedly refused medical examination by a doctor for wearing headscarf.
Fatma Arduc, 69, rushed to a private health center for stomach pain, but, she said, instead of getting a medical examination, she was exposed to a question of the Doctor: "Why are you covered?"
The elderly women said she told female doctor Gulsen Y., "it is our usual clothes". The women said, despite the discomfort she was having, the doctor asked her to bring ID card.
Artuç went to home and came back with her identity card. Seeing her photo on the National ID card that shows her head covered, this time the doctor allegedly claimed the pictures on the ID card and health card do not resemble and refused the medical examination of the elderly women, according to the woman's remarks.
After the refusal, Arduc went to the state hospital, 2 kilometers away from the clinic and got treated by another doctor without any problem.
Confused by the refusal, Hamit Arduc, her husband, complained Dr. Y. to the Provincial Health Directorate in Eskisehir, a city in Turkey.
"To become a doctor, these people take the hippocratic oath to treat everyone. But look at the situation we are in. We do not want to believe what we faced, but it is true. I'm so sorry," he said.
Saying, she cried because of this ordeal, Fatma Arduc stated, she was examined by Dr. Y. several times before, but did not encounter such a
Dr. Gulsen Y. denied all claims by the Arduc family and said she did not "discriminate between patients".
There must be a "misunderstanding", said the doctor. "I do not want to talk about it too much. If it is requested, I'll give the necessary response. These claims are not true."
After receiving the complain from the Arduc family, Provincial Health Directorate started an investigation.
