Twenty-year-old serviceman Marc van de Kuilen lost both legs in the shooting.

It had already been established that two other Dutch soldiers who died in the same operation were also killed by their own troops.

The three Dutchmen were mistaken for Taliban fighters during a night-time reconnaissance mission together with Afghan units in an area with a strong Taliban presence.

Two Afghan soldiers were also killed by friendly fire during the operation.

The Dutch troops are stationed in the southern province of Uruzgan as part of the international peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan.
