The guards tried to stop Arminia Michel, 35, while trying to cross into Israel through barbed wire marking the border near the Egyptian city of Rafah in the Sinai peninsula.

He was shot dead after he refused to surrender, the officials said.

Separately, eight people, including four Chinese, two Nepalese and two Eritrean nationals, were arrested while trying to illegally enter Israel, also near Rafah.

An Eritrean woman and two people were recently shot dead in similar circumstances.

Illegal immigrants, mostly from Africa, are believed to pay hundreds of dollars to human traffickers to help them cross from Egypt into Israel to look for jobs.
