Erdoğan answers Economist's claims

Turkish Prime Minister's Office said Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan and U.S. President George W. Bush only reached an agreement to fight against the terrorist organization PKK --- declared as the "common enemy."

The office referred to an article of "The Economist" magazine titled "was there a deal between Turkey and America? - Raids across the border."

In the article, the magazine wrote about Erdogan-Bush meeting in Washington D.C. on November 5th and claimed that the United States and Turkey might have struck a deal. It wrote, "in exchange for American support for the limited Turkish raids, and a promise to order the Iraqi Kurds to take action against the PKK, Turkey's prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is thought to have made his own promises to George Bush." According to the magazine, these promises include recognising the regional government in north of Iraq and introducing a more liberal amnesty for PKK terrorists.

The Prime Minister's Office said, "if we are to talk about an agreement reached during the White House meeting, it is only an agreement made to launch a 'concrete cooperation' to combat the terrorist organization PKK-- which we have declared as our 'common enemy'."

"We have seen some recent examples of this cooperation," it also said.

The Prime Minister's Office said the article was only a speculation and therefore, it is not based on any source or evidence.

"It only reflect the personal comments of the writer. These speculative comments were only written in The Economist, and therefore they cannot be regarded 'a significant allegation'," the office told.

The office said the magazine could not even qualify the speculations as a 'claim' but publishing such a baseless and subjective comment has overshadowed the seriousness and credibility of the magazine.

"The possibilities mentioned in the article are inconsistent and do not reflect the facts," the office also said.
