Erdogan victory 'best result possible': Vatican
The Vatican considers Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's strong victory in Sunday's general election in Turkey "the best result for Europe and for the Christian churches.

"In an interview published on Monday by Italian daily Corriere della Sera, Cardinal Sergio Sebastiani also invited the European Union to resume talks on Turkey's entry of the bloc with Ankara.

Sebastiani is one of the Vatican's top experts on Turkey, having lived in the country for a decade as a diplomatic representative (nuncio) of the pope. He currently heads a Vatican office in charge of economic affairs.

Erdogan's Islamic-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP) easily won re-election in Sunday's poll, securing about 46 per cent of the national vote.

Sebastiani said the result would allow Erdogan to form a single- party government and press ahead with reforms but would not put him in a position to undermine the secular nature of the Turkish state.

Previously weary of Turkey's entry into the EU, Pope Benedict XVI lent his support to Ankara's EU bid during a visit to Turkey last year.
