EU denies Greek reports on Turkey's intervention on copter

The EU Commission refuted allegations suggesting that Turkey harassed an EU helicopter, which appeared in the Greek media.

EU Comission Spokesman Amadeu Altafaj Tardio who issued a statement on the allegations, said EU agency for combat with illegal migration, Frontex, assigned with the coordination of the joint operation launched by Greece in Eastern Mediterranean, ordered the said helicopter to monitor the Greek air space over the Greek islands in the Aegean.

The spokesman said the Frontex helicopter never violated the Turkish airspace and was therefore never harassed by Turkey.

He explained what occurred instead was a failed attempt to establish radio communication due to different frequencies between the helicopter and Turkish authorities, trying to identify an aircraft which appeared in their radar.

Tardio said Frontex was carrying out talks with Turkey over the common frame for operational cooperation in management of borders, adding that Turkish authorities were notified about the Poseidon 2009 operation.
