EU members to open negotiations

EU member states have agreed to open negotiations with Turkey on enterprise and industrial policy. However, EU insists that Turkey open its ports and airports in order to conclude negotiations.

EU members to open negotiations

EU member states have agreed to open negotiations with Turkey onenterprise and industrial policy on Thursday, sources told A.A correspondent.

 According to sources, the Enlargement Working Group, comprised ofdiplomats of EU member states responsible for enlargement, decided today tolaunch negotiations with Turkeyon enterprise and industrial policy.

According to this decision, negotiations will be launched with theintergovernmental conference to be held on Thursday.

However, in order to conclude negotiations on this chapter, Turkey has toopen its ports and airports to Greek Cypriot use, and renew its national actionplan of 2003 regarding its industry policy so that it will cover industriessuch as food, textile, iron-steel, oil products, automotive, ship construction,electronics and railway vehicles.

The Committee of Permanent Representatives of the EU (COREPER) will ratifythis decision tomorrow without discussing it.

The EU is to be represented by Germany'spermanent representative Wilhelm Schoenfelder and Turkey by State Minister and chiefnegotiator Ali Babacan in the intergovernmental meeting to be held on Thursday.

Turkey expects the Unionto open negotiations on economic and monetary policy, statistics and financialcontrol during Germany'spresidency.
